Civil Engineering Student
Harvey J. Killick
Currently an ICE QUEST Scholar with Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, a proactive Civil Engineering undergraduate at the University of the West of England, and Treasurer of the Hub Radio Society, I am adept at coordinating multiple ventures in my studies and in my personal life.
My recent summer placements at Morgan Sindall Infrastructure provided me the opportunities to monitor construction progress and collaborate with diverse teams. These experiences underline my commitments to quality and efficiency, values which are deeply ingrained in my work ethic. I am eager to continue contributing these perspectives to my future studies, striving to further my professional development and career goals.

Water & Highways 2025 – Welsh Water Framework

My second placement with Morgan Sindall Infrastructure was at Plasdŵr, Cardiff, in their Water & Highways sector. I spent 8 weeks on a live tunnelling project as part of the Welsh Water Framework as a ‘Graduate Site Engineer’, supporting the team across a broad range of technical and operational activities.
My responsibilities varied week to week and included supporting the TBM lift, raising and managing requisitions, conducting QA checks on steel reinforcement, and performing groundwater monitoring through borehole dipping. I also helped plan crane a lift through engineering calculations, recorded water flow data, and led site inductions. Giving me valuable experience in both safety and technical documentation. I had regular exposure to tunnel design queries and technical meetings, which helped open my eyes to and applying theoretical knowledge to real-world challenges.
I also contributed to STEM engagement by delivering a workshop at a local primary school. A significant flooding incident midway through the project caused disruption, but also revealed how critical safety, resilience, and teamwork are in live infrastructure environments. It gave me a deeper appreciation of what it means to act responsibly and do the right thing, one of Morgan Sindall’s core values.
Overall, this placement was an eye-opening and rewarding experience. I leave with a stronger skillset and greater clarity on my future direction. A big thank you to the entire Plasdŵr team for the support and trust throughout my time on site!
“Harvey has completed everything that has been asked of him very professionally … Harvey has fitted in well with tall members of the team and uplifted the office.”

Rail 2024 – Beckton DLR Depot Expansion

My first placement with Morgan Sindall was in Beckton, East London, where I worked for 8 weeks on the DLR Beckton Depot expansion for TFL. I fulfilled the role of a ‘Graduate Site Engineer’ working as part of the Delivery team focusing on temporary works.
My main responsibilities were to proactively monitor the progress of construction in certain areas of the site, such as the Maintenance Facility Building Haul Road OTC, by recording daily site diaries. This involved meeting with the foreman to discuss and record the day’s activity progression via pictures. I also had the responsibility of raising requisitions for items/materials, coordinating their procurement, and overseeing their arrival, drawing on my cost/data analysis skills. I also filed permits to allow work to be safely signed off and executed such as permits to dig. I worked very closely with lots of different departments where I had to communicate effectively with teams both in the office and onsite to coordinate plans, translate ideas, prepare documentation, and assist in finding solutions to tasks
My second main responsibility was a package of work on the procurement, relocation, and reconnection of a septic tank for the Southern Sidings office, this package of work required me to draw on my logical thinking with data analysis skills as well as explore the world of designing concrete structures, services management, and meticulous, considered planning. I successfully put together a WPP with corresponding TBS’s and filed the relevant permits to allow the work to commence. It was a fantastic experience, thank you to the Beckton team at MSI Rail!
“Harvey proved himself to be a valuable member of the team, he was consistently enthusiastic and responded well to problems and all the new information thrown at him.”
